Strong has been around for years and has earned its reputation. It is a clean, reliable workout logger with good one-rep max tracking, a solid exercise library and a straightforward approach to recording sessions. Many experienced lifters have used it for years.
STRNTH is newer and approaches the problem differently. Rather than building a good logbook, it builds a coaching system that includes a logbook. The aim is to answer not just "what did I lift?" but "am I getting stronger, and what should I do differently?"
Here is how they actually compare.
What Strong does well
Strong is reliable and fast. Logging a session takes seconds per set and the interface stays out of your way. It has been iterated on for years and the core logging experience is polished.
The one-rep max tracking is good. Strong calculates estimated 1RM from your sets and reps and keeps a history you can reference. For lifters who care about that number, it works well.
The exercise library is large. Custom exercises are easy to add. The app handles standard lifting movements without any friction.
Strong also has a desktop version and iCloud sync, which is useful if you want to review your history on a larger screen.
Where Strong falls short
Strong is a logbook with good 1RM tracking. Beyond that, the coaching layer is thin.
There is no built-in periodisation. You can create routines and log them, but the app does not manage intensity or volume across a training block. There are no planned deload weeks, no automatic weight progression between sessions and no concept of a training cycle.
There is no recovery tracking. Nothing in the app tells you whether you should train today based on what you have done this week.
There is no age-aware logic. A 45-year-old who needs more recovery time and a different volume ceiling gets the same experience as a 22-year-old.
The analytics are functional but limited. You can see your history and your estimated 1RM trend but the app does not surface patterns, flag plateaus or tell you what to change.
There is no HIIT module.
What STRNTH does differently
STRNTH starts from the premise that most lifters do not need a better logbook. They need a better programme and a coach to tell them when it is working.
The programme library provides structured multi-week plans with planned phases, deloads and automatic weight progression. You start week one and the app manages the intensity from there.
The STRNTH Index is a single strength score across your whole training history, organised into five tiers from Foundation to Elite. It updates after every session and tells you plainly whether you are moving forward.
The coaching tab does things Strong does not attempt. It detects plateaus and suggests specific changes. It shows muscle balance across your training volume. It generates weekly AI summaries. It tracks recovery per muscle group and gives you a readiness signal before each session.
Age-aware programming adjusts volume, recovery time and intensity based on where you are in life. This is built into every programme, not bolted on.
HIIT training is in the same app: six modalities, heart rate zone tracking and Bluetooth device support.
The honest verdict
Strong is a mature, dependable workout tracker. If you already have a well-designed programme, a coach, or a deep knowledge of periodisation, Strong will reliably record your sessions. It stays out of your way and does what it says.
STRNTH is for lifters who want the coaching layer to come from the app. It handles programme design, progression, recovery and analytics so you do not have to manage those decisions manually.
Choose Strong if:
- You have a coach or your own programme and need a clean logbook
- Desktop sync and iCloud backup matter to you
- You want a long-established app with a well-maintained track record
Choose STRNTH if:
- You want structured multi-week programmes with built-in progression
- You are in your 30s, 40s or beyond and want training adapted to your recovery
- You want the app to tell you when a lift has stalled and what to do about it
- You want HIIT and strength training in the same coaching system
- You want a score (the STRNTH Index) that shows your overall progress over months
The logging experience in both apps is good. The difference is what the app does with what you log. For a broader comparison across more apps, see our best workout tracker guide.
