Who we are
Breathe by STRNTH is operated by Next Big Leap Ltd, registered in England and Wales, acting as the data controller. Contact us at info [at] strnthapp [dot] com.
The short version
Breathe works on your device. Your sessions, breathing routines and check-ins are stored on your phone and are not sent to us. We do not have accounts and we do not ask you to sign in. Sensor readings, such as heart rate, the camera and the microphone, are used in the moment on your device and are not uploaded. The app is free and shows ads, which is the main way data leaves your device. You can remove ads with a one-time purchase.
Data stored on your device
- Sessions: the breathing sessions you complete, their length and when
- Routines: any custom breathing routines you build and their phases
- Check-ins: the mood notes you choose to record before or after a session
- Heart rate readings: the before and after readings from a paired strap or watch, if you use them
- Diagnostics: your breath-hold and BOLT results, if you use them
- Preferences: your app settings, such as theme, sound, haptics and reminders
This information stays on your device. It is not uploaded to us. If you delete the app it is removed. You can export it to a file yourself, which sends it only where you choose.
Heart rate and sensors
Breathe can read from sensors to guide or measure a session. Everything below is optional, asked for only when you use the feature, and processed on your device in the moment. None of it is sent to us.
- Heart rate monitors: with your permission the app connects to a Bluetooth chest strap or a sport watch to read your heart rate around a session. The before and after readings are saved on your device.
- Camera: an optional heart-rate check can use the camera to read your pulse from your fingertip. No photo or video is taken, kept or sent. Only the estimated rate is used.
- Microphone: the "blow the light" activity reacts to how loudly you breathe out, using the live sound level only. No audio is recorded, kept or sent.
- Motion sensor: the belly-breathing trainer uses the phone's motion sensor to see your breath rise and fall. This needs no permission and nothing is stored.
Apple Health and Health Connect
If you turn it on, Breathe writes your completed sessions as mindful minutes to Apple Health on iOS, or as a guided breathing session to Health Connect on Android. This is off by default and asks for permission first. We only write these sessions, we do not read your health data, and none of it comes to us. You can turn it off or remove access at any time in your device settings.
iCloud sync
On iOS you can sync your routines, settings and progress across your own devices through your private iCloud account, using Apple's key-value store. It is stored in your iCloud, not on our servers, and we cannot read it. It is off by default and covered by your agreement with Apple. You can turn it off or delete it from your device.
Saving a mandala
At the end of a session you can save the mandala it drew to your photo library. The app only writes the image you choose to save. It does not read your other photos.
Reminders
If you turn on a daily reminder, the app schedules a local notification on your device at the time you pick. This is handled by your phone and is not sent to us.
Casting and external displays
If you cast a session, the app sends it to a Chromecast, AirPlay device or external display on your own network so it can be shown on a bigger screen. This is for display only and does not go to us.
Advertising
We show ads through Google AdMob. To do this, Google may collect a device advertising identifier and information about how you interact with ads, and use it to select and measure ads. In the UK and EEA we ask for your consent before requesting personalised ads, using Google's consent form. On iOS we also show Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt, and we only allow tracking if you agree. If you decline, you still see ads, but non-personalised ones. You can read how Google uses this data in the Google privacy and terms.
Purchases
The remove ads purchase is handled by RevenueCat together with Apple or Google. They confirm your purchase status so the app can hide ads and restore the purchase on a new device. We never see your payment details.
Diagnostics and usage
If enabled, we use a crash reporting service and an anonymous product analytics service to see how the app performs and fix problems. These do not identify you and are not linked to an account, because the app has none.
Who we share data with
- Google, for AdMob ads and consent
- RevenueCat, and Apple or Google, for the remove ads purchase
- Apple iCloud, for your sync, where you turn it on
- Apple Health or Health Connect, for the sessions you choose to write, where you turn it on
- A crash reporting and a product analytics provider, for diagnostics, where enabled
International transfers
Some of these providers, such as Google, process data outside the UK and EEA. Where that happens we rely on an approved transfer mechanism, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
Retention
Your sessions, routines, check-ins and settings stay on your device until you delete them or remove the app. Data held by our ad, purchase and diagnostics providers is kept under their own retention rules.
Your rights
Under UK and EU GDPR you can access, correct, delete, export, restrict or object to processing of your personal data, and withdraw consent where it applies. Most of your data lives on your device and is already in your control. You can reset your advertising identifier in your device settings, and change ad consent in the app. For anything else, write to us at info [at] strnthapp [dot] com. You can also complain to the ICO.
Children
Breathe is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. The app includes gentle activities for children, meant to be used with a parent, and they work the same way as the rest of the app, on your device. If you believe a child has given us their data, email us and we will remove it.
Changes
We will update this page and change the effective date if we make material changes.
